The Disney Cruise Line (DCL) Is A Magical Cruise Line Company That Is Growing Rapidly

Disney Cruise Line is owned by The Walt Disney Company and headquartered in Celebration, Florida.

Disney Cruise Line offers magical Disney vacations that every member of your family will never forget.

Your family will be convinced these Disney cruise vacations were created just for them — from pint-sized cruising Mouseketeers to Disney Cruise veterans.

The History Of Disney Cruises

The Disney Cruise dream began in November of 1985 when Premier Cruise Lines became the official cruise line of The Walt Disney World Resort.

Before this historic event took place, Premier’s “Big Red Boat” offered Disney characters and packages on their cruise ships that also included stays at the Walt Disney World Resort.

When the ten-year contract between Premier Cruise Lines and Disney ended, Disney went on it’s own to fulfill it’s dream to one day become one of the best cruise lines in the world.

Disney’s next step was to contract the Fincantieri Shipyard (in Venice, Italy) to build a 350-million-dollar liner reminiscent of the grand, trans-Atlantic liners of the early 20th century. We now know this beautiful vessel as the Disney Magic.

The Disney Magic And The
Disney Wonder Sets Sail

On July 30, 1998, the Disney Magic launched and hasn’t looked back. The magnificent new cruise ship boasted a classic, streamlined silhouette, twin funnels, and well-appointed interiors.

Disney designed its cruise ships to be innovative, offering amazing itineraries and programs, each with Disney’s hallmark, first-class service.

The next cruise ship to be added to the fleet was the Disney Wonder. The Disney Wonder set sail for the first time on August 15, 1999.

Disney Cruise - Disney Magic and Disney Wonder

The Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder are almost identical vessels. The cruise ships each contain 877 staterooms and can accommodate 2,700 passengers.

They are virtually identical in their design, with a few variations in interior design, restaurants and entertainment venues. Both contain areas designed exclusively for various age groups, including toddlers, young kids, teens, and adults.

They are the first ships in the cruise lines industry to be designed and built as family cruise ships. Unlike most cruise ships out there, they do not include casinos, which makes them unique.

Disney cruise ships also feature awesome horns, which play the opening seven-note theme “When You Wish Upon A Star” from Disney's Pinocchio, in addition to the traditional horn.

The horn was personally one of my favorite things.

During the sail away party, when you hear the big whistle blast and the cruise ship starts to move, you just know that the vacation of a lifetime is about to begin.

As a matter of fact, I liked the horn so much that I have it as a ring tone on my cell phone. Click Here if you’d like to hear it.

Since its launch in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has established itself as the leader within the cruise ships industry, offering an exciting new way for your family to enjoy Disney vacations.

Its two cruise ships — the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder — combine the magic of Disney with the luxury of classic ocean travel but as you would expect, Disney is not done yet. Not by a long shot…

The Disney Dream And The
Disney Fantasy Are Here

Disney Cruise Line announced on February 22, 2007 that two new cruise ships are to be added in 2011 and 2012. The Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy are being built by Meyer Werft shipyard, based in Papenburg, Germany.

The first steel cut was made in March 2009. These new cruise ships will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line to meet the sustained demand for Disney's family cruise ship vacations.

Disney Cruise Line Cruise Ships

They will be 330 m (1,100 ft) long and 37 m (120 ft) wide. These 128,000-ton ships will be 2 decks taller than the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder and will have 1,250 staterooms each.

Both new cruise ships are planned to depart from Port Canaveral. With the arrival of the Disney Dream in 2011, the Disney Wonder will be relocated to Los Angeles to take on the mission of a first-ever; four-month season of seven-night Alaskan cruises.

The Disney Fantasy arrives in 2012 and the Disney Magic will once again return to the Mediterranean region during the summer for 10- and 11-night cruises to Spain, Italy and France, with additional calls to Northern Africa, the island nation of Malta and Corsica.

Disney Cruise Line And The
Port Canaveral Port Authority

The Disney Cruise Line also operates the Disney Cruise Line Terminal, which currently homeports the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. It is located in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Disney Cruise Line Port

Disney Cruise Line has negotiated with the Port Canaveral port authority and has extended their contract for 15 more years, through 2022.

As part of this contract, the port authority will expand and upgrade the dock in order to accommodate the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy (both of which will be homeported there).

The terminal will also be enlarged to accommodate more passengers and luggage, and finally a parking garage will be built by 2011.

The Disney cruise terminal will not be the only thing getting an upgrade. Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, is also getting a makeover.

Castaway Cay… Disney’s Private Paradise

The Disney Cruise Line also has a private paradise know as Castaway Cay, a private island in the Bahamas designed as an exclusive port of call for Disney's ships.

This 1,000-acre tropical oasis features miles of crystal-clear turquoise waters as far as the eye can see, powdery white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, an awesome island barbecue (a big hit with my wife by the way).

There are plenty of snorkeling, hiking and water sports activities on Castaway Cay. Swimming with and feeding the Stingrays at Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure is also a favorite of Disney cruisers.

Castaway Cay provides the ultimate escape, whether its adventure, relaxation or quality time with the family.

Designed with areas and activities for every age group, Castaway Cay provides an authentic tropical experience for everyone.

Castaway Cay

Most recently, Disney Cruise Line announced enhancements to the island designed to deliver an even greater guest experience and to prepare for the arrival of the new Disney cruise ships.

Enhancements include extended beaches, private beach cabanas, a new teen hang out and new water play features including a floating play structure set in the Castaway lagoon complete with two water slides.
